The Weekend’s Top 5

Need a plan for the weekend? Let Hannah Dolan make some suggestions.

Sooz KempnerWhat: Leicester Comedy Festival
Where: Various locations, Leicester
When: All weekend (ends 26 February)
Cost: Various
Leicester Comedy Festival is going into its second weekend and you’re spoiled for choice! I’d totally recommend getting up close and a little too personal to this awesome lot, whose articles we just happen to have the honour of publishing: Sooz Kempner (pictured), Lou Conran, Joanna Neary, Gráinne Maguire, Harriet Dyer, Rachel Fairburn, Kate Fox, Juliet Meyers and Laura Lexx! And Joanna Neary and Harriet Dyer are doing MORE THAN ONE SHOW, greedy piglets.

What: Arcade Cafe
Where: The Gate, Cardiff
When: Friday, 7pm-10pm
Cost: £3.50
Calling all retro computer games fans! The folks at The Arcade Vaults are bringing a load of old consoles and their best multiplayer games to The Gate for a fun time. You will, they promise, be able to get your fingers on a broad range of creaky old hardware including Japanese heavy hitters like the SNES and the Megadrive and beloved British nerd machines like the Spectrum ZX, the BBC Micro and probably one of the Amigas.

What: Grim Histories: The Victorian Science of Murder
Where: Sweet Venues, Brighton
When: Sunday, 3pm-4.30pm
Cost: £4-£6.50
If there’s one thing everybody definitely loves it’s a brutal murder from the olden days. This ‘indoor tour’ is described as a virtual tour around the country, but there’s not a huge amount of info regarding how that might happen, so it could be some sort of mind-blowing future tech or it could just an actor doing their full range of regional accents.
It ALSO says, “not suitable for those of a weak constitution” and I really hope they’re going to go full force buckets-of-guts-thrown-at-the-audience and everything. Let me know how that goes.

What: Retro Games Fair
Where: Marriott Hotel, Leeds
When: Saturday
Cost: £2
Hey, I see you there, reading about the Cardiff Arcade Cafe and thinking to yourself, “I love old games but I live in or around Leeds.” Well, holy shit, have I got a surprise for you. It’s only the Retro Games Fair in Leeds. I KNOW, RIGHT?
Whether you’re looking to complete your BANDAI Wonderswan collection or just want to blow into the bottom of some NES carts to see if they work, you’ll find all kinds of goodies here. And, if you’re very lucky, some sort of incredible bargain.

What: The Makers Market
Where: Adjacent to Chorlton Library, Manchester
When: Saturday
Cost: FREE
Markets are good and everything, but don’t you sometimes wish there was more modern taxidermy and goats milk soap for sale? You’re in luck, goddammit, you’re in so much luck.

The Makers Markets are regular events that take place all over Greater Manchester and this weekend they’ll be popping up in Chorlton, where the money is. Go get your artisan pies and your fancy doughnuts and your biltong, whatever that is, don’t make me Google it. Go on, off you go!
