The Weekend’s Top 5

Need some ideas for the weekend? Then let Hannah Dolan help.

What:
Djordje Ozbolt: The Grand DeTour
Where: Holburne Museum, Bath
When: All weekend (ends 5 March)
Cost: FREE
Bath. People of Bath. Bathians. Bathers? The Holburne Museum houses a collection of artefacts Sir William Holburne collected on holiday in Europe in the 19th century, which he subsequently bequeathed to the people of Bath. The Bathnauts.
So far, so boring, BUT the museum has commissioned interesting Serbian artist Djorde Ozbolt to come in and fuck about with things, resulting in some pretty sweeeeet art. Check that shit out.

What:
Chinese New Year 2017 in London
Where: Various locations
When: Sunday
Cost: FREE
Chinese New Year happens everywhere, not just in China, and it happens especially well in London, England. This year (the year of the rooster FYI) the celebrations will be taking place in Trafalgar Square, Chinatown (obvs) and around and about the West End.
There will be a parade, some drumming, a load of puppets, all the firecrackers, lion and dragon dances, all that stuff. There will almost certainly be loads of Chinese people there if you’re worried about cultural appropriation though, I KNOW I AM WORRIED.

What:
York Residents Festival 2017
Where: Various locations
When: All weekend
Cost: FREE (with a YorkCard or valid York Student ID)
York. People of York. Yorkings. Yorkeners. Yorkts. You know how it is when you live in a tourist town, there’s a ton of things to do you never go near because they’re for the tourists.
Well, York’s Residents Festival invites you to be a fucking tourist in your own town (I’m paraphrasing) with sightseeing and food and drink bargains for anybody who has a York Card. I assume if you’re York based you’ll know what a York Card is; I haven’t got any idea myself.

What: Independent Venue Week
Where: Across the country
When: All weekend
Cost: Various
Supporting local, independent businesses is super important in these turbulent days of tax-dodging multi-national conglomerate bastards and festivals like Independent Venue Week are great for shining a light on places that could really use your money year-round. In fact, IVW is a two-fer because you also get to see cool bands who need you to buy tickets so they can pay their rent. These gigs are good for everybody involved, so get your dancing shoes on.

What:
Grub: ExtraVEGANza
Where: Alphabet Brewing Company
When: Saturday
Cost: FREE
HEY YOU, it’s STILL Veganuary. I see you eyeing up that cheese, knock it off. You know what can help you knock it off? Getting somebody else to prepare delicious vegan food for you at the brilliantly named ExtraVEGANza. Top shelf wordplay that, dynamite. Grub’s regular food event is having a vegan special this weekend only: bring your kids, bring your dogs, bring your belly, bring cash.
