The Weekend’s Top 5

Forests, cider and poems? This weekend’s going to be awesome.

Enchanted Forest
The Enchanted Forest
Where: Faskally Wood, Pitlochry
When: All weekend (ends 30 October)
Cost: Various
This lovely little thing is now in its FIFTEENTH year. Faskally Wood in Highland Perthshire gets lit the fuck up all month and piles on interactivity, puppetry, music and storytelling to create something different every year. It’s sort of like if the Blackpool illuminations weren’t a depressing disappointment.

What: Cheeki Monkeys BIG Baby and Children’s Market
St Peters Church Hall, Coventry
When: Saturday
FREE for children, £1 for adults
This is NOT a place to purchase babies and children (I’m crazy broody). On Saturday St Peter’s Church Hall will be awash with thousands of preloved and handmade goods. Check them out before you buy. Plus, there’s entertainment to keep the kids amused and a separate bar area to get hot AND cold drinks.

The British Pet Show
Where: South of England Showground, Ardingly, Sussex
When: Saturday and Sunday
Cost: £3-£10
I don’t know why it’s called The BRITISH Pet Show, it certainly doesn’t specify that it’s just for British pets on the website. Anyhoo, if you’re like me and the thought of being in the vicinity of any fluff or non-fluff makes you one giddy kipper then this is clearly for you. Dogs welcome (DOGS SHOULD ALWAYS BE WELCOME).

What: Slow Food Fest
Where: Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan
When: Saturday
Cost: FREE
Slow Food is a movement big enough to warrant not only its own website but regional subdivisions too. It was founded to counter the rise of fast food and fast life and how our eating habits affect the world we live in. EVERY DAY IS A LEARNING DAY.
Slow Food Fest is hosted by Slow Food South East Wales. Feel like you don’t know enough about food? Pop along to the food talks. Don’t know how to cook? Go see the cooking demos. Cider pressing! Bread making! Foraging! Foraging? FORAGING.

What: Off the Shelf 2016 – Festival of Words
Various venues
When: All weekend (throughout October)
Cost: Various
Off the Shelf is Sheffield’s annual festival of literature, poetry and other things that have words in and also just words on their own, I guess. There are events all month long and this weekend features creative writing workshops, book and poetry readings and an introduction to the mysteries and origins of the medieval myth of The Green Man. Loads of words, mate. Loads of words.
