What was the first thing you wanted to be? Actress.

When did you know you wanted to be what you are now? When I was about 28!

What’s your strongest memory from school/education? Stress and exams.

When you’re not working, what else do you like to do? Walk my beautiful rescue dog.

What has been your proudest creative moment to date? Writing my fictionalised novel of being a receptionist at a brothel.

What was your favourite day at work? Leaving the BBC after 16 years’ service.

What would you like to erase from your past? Too many things to mention.

What brings you the most joy? My dog.

What makes you angry? Ignorance, cruelty and cronyism.

Professionally, who has been your biggest inspiration? Russell T Davies.

Have you ever met someone who made you go weak at the knees? Yes.

What advice would you give a woman who wants a career like yours? Accept rejection as part of the process, be kind and courteous and keep going.

How do you define success? Do what you want to do and not what you think you ought to do.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever had? Be yourself, everyone else is taken.

What’s your favourite photograph of yourself? This one (see photo at top).

Where did you go on your favourite holiday? Corsica.

Who can’t you live without? Lots of people.

What can’t you live without? Tea.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? Stopping drinking 10 years ago.
