New(ish) mum Samantha Dooey-Miles is charting her life in doodles. This week, she remembers her long-lost friend, sleep.
Let’s be clear: when I had a baby I knew I wouldn’t sleep much at the start. What I didn’t realise is that even when the baby starts sleeping for longer, you are still knackered.
At first, you wake through the night terrified something awful has happened and that’s why you’ve not been woken by their cries. Their new sleep cycle has them wide awake at 5am so yes, technically they’ve slept all night but not in the way you’d hoped for.
Then they have a sleep regression (people wanting children, remember this phrase: it will become the bane of your existence) and then another thing and another thing.
Before you know it, your child is saying “dada” and walking and you still aren’t sleeping and don’t see how you’ll ever have a lie-in before you are 50. But you love them and they appear to love you too, so you know, that’s nice.
