New(ish) mum Samantha Dooey-Miles is charting her life in doodles. This week, she’s revelling in self-care, but conscious she’ll miss those cuddles.

Self-care. Do you do it? No, I do not mean that sort of self-care. I mean making time to do activities which help you maintain good physical, mental and emotional health. So I suppose that sort of self-care probably counts, but minds out of the gutter for now, please, that’s not what I’m talking about.

Despite having a child to care for, a job to turn up to four days a week and a husband to keep under the illusion that legally binding himself to me for life was a good idea, I am excellent at making time for looking after myself. Unless it is an outlandishly gruesome day, I will always be able to find five minutes to have a cup of tea or do my hair.

Having time to yourself is important, even if it feels selfish as you thrust a screaming child onto your husband the second he’s back from football so you can go read your book for half an hour in peace.

Next week I am going to have six whole days on my own (well, not entirely on my own, I am on a work trip) and that seems like it could be almost too much time to myself. I’ll be on a different continent so can’t pop back for a cuddle. The longest the little ‘un and I have been parted until now is a day. I imagine the urge for cuddles will be strong.

To combat the inevitable homesickness I’ve done a Julie Andrews and doodled about my favourite things. I’ll update you whether this was a success or not in two weeks’ time.
