A Moment’s Peace: The BFI Reuben Library

Our new series recommending the best places to be by yourself for a bit gets started today with Rebekah Staton suggesting you call action on a visit to The BFI Reuben Library in London’s Southbank.

When the rain is blowing in your face, and the whole world is on your case, we want to offer you a warm embrace in the form of a cosy, tried and tested location you can retreat to whether you have 10 minutes or a full day to fill.
Whether you need somewhere to work or somewhere to flop; somewhere to be quiet or somewhere to scream, we hope in the coming weeks, some of these suggestions will become your new favourite places.

And so to the BFI Reuben Library.

You don’t have to be a film and television buff to enjoy the quiet working environment at this library. If you are though, there is an array of fantastic books to spend your day perusing, and for a small fee you can take your research home with you, thanks to the state-of-the-art scanning machines.

With a deadline to meet, it’s often difficult to find a location that offers the ideal working conditions quite like this petite gem. If you wish to work at a desk, speak to one of the helpful librarians, who will assign you a locker.

Coats, bags, phones and other unnecessaries locked away, you return to the library, laptop and notebook essentials in hand, and in my experience, go on to get a lot done.

After recommending it to a friend she decided to take her daughter there to do some GCSE revision. And both remarked that the visit had been a great success.

I can’t promise all the patrons will remember to whisper their enquiry to the librarian, but you can forgive the occasional interruption, when the rest of the time is so conducive to work.

With the Benugo Cafe only meters away, when you’re ready for a break, a decent cappuccino is well within your grasp. And after all that work why not reward yourself with a movie? You’ll deserve a rest.
