Don’t censor “pussy”

Donald Trump’s “pussy grabbing” assertions are far from “locker room chat”. Jo Caulfield, for one, is seething.

cat with open mouthI was already disgusted by Donald Trump, already incredulous that such a crass, self-serving bully could be in contention to be president of America.

But for a while after the ‘Trump Tapes’ story broke, I didn’t know he said “grab them by the pussy”. As I caught the news on TVs in hotel rooms, I continually saw this quote printed on screen: “When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ‘em by the *****” – as at the same time the tape was played with the crucial word bleeped over.

“Boobs” I filled in. And then I thought, what a disgusting misogynistic pig. I joined in on social media, outraged with everyone else. I was already appalled that a man would behave in this way. But then I finally read a newspaper… what the fuck?!

He said “pussy”. He said, “Grab them by the pussy.”

This is not locker room talk, it’s a criminal assault.

As is grabbing someone’s boobs by the way; women should never put up with such behaviour. It is not fun or banter, it’s assault. But to grab a woman between her legs without consent is so violating I can’t believe there is not more outrage. This is criminal assault.

Twice I have been “grabbed by the pussy” against my will. Both times it was an attack on the street when I was walking home on my own.

The first time it happened I was taken completely by surprise. A man came up quickly behind me and put his hand between my legs. This does two things: it shocks you and it knocks you off balance, so you fall to the ground. Once on the ground you are easy to attack further. Fortunately I wasn’t frozen by fear; I screamed and roared and the man ran off without doing anything else. It left me shaken and upset.

“He said ‘pussy’. He said, ‘Grab them by the pussy.’ This is not locker room talk, it’s a criminal assault.”

The second time, I knew something was going to happen. The man crossed the road to walk next to me and asked me the time. He then started to make conversation. I remember wanting to tell him to fuck off, but I didn’t want to antagonise him.

This was more than 25 years ago but I remember it vividly. I told him to leave me alone. Then he stopped walking, so I was in front and he grabbed me in exactly the same way as the other attacker had. I managed to stay on my feet and, Dick Emery style, swung my bag at him, screaming at him to “FUCK OFF”. He ran off. I was five doors away from my flat.

This second time I didn’t cry, I was incandescent. Simply filled with an incredulous rage. What kind of sick man just goes around scaring women at night? What kind of man gets a thrill from violating women? What. Kind. Of. Man?

Donald Trump.

When someone does that to you it makes you feel worthless and vulnerable. It leaves you feeling always slightly scared.

Media outlets should not belittle what he’s done by bleeping and asterisking out “pussy”. The word “pussy” is not offensive in the context of this news story. It is vital. Who the fuck are the media protecting by not giving the full facts? They are protecting powerful men.

It smacks of that climate where women were not listened to, told to lighten up, told not to make a fuss, told that a man can do what he likes to you. The climate that allowed the likes of Jimmy Savile to commit rape and assault for years.

I am mad as hell. My pussy is for people I like and medical professionals only.
